About Affiliates Programs

Affiliate:

“A corporation may be referred to as an affiliate of another when it is related to it, but not strictly controlled by it, as with a subsidiary relationship, or when it is desired to avoid the appearance of control”. (Source: Wikipedia). Affiliation with a party is now gaining popularity because of the role it plays in marketing a product.

The first step to be taken by a person who is interested in an affiliate program is to come to a decision on whether to become an affiliate or to gain through this association. The process to become an affiliate is relatively easy. Identify the network site with which you will like to create the relationship and check whether they have any affiliation programs. If the affiliate network has a program for association, all he needs to do is fill out the application with the name and other personal details, along with the mode of payment preferred by him from amongst the options offered by the affiliate network. Besides the personal details, the affiliate needs to hand over the details of the site like the URL and a brief sketch of the contents of his site, whether blog or otherwise. This makes it possible for the network to analyze the appropriateness of the website content with the web content of the program. Many of the affiliate networks provide this service without charging any fee on the association, adding to its attractiveness.

On the submission of the request to the affiliate network, they review the site to check the suitability of the content besides the expected traffic on the site. Tools like ClustrMaps, if adopted by the affiliate can throw light over the number of visitors a day who goes through the page, giving an idea on the expected callers to the posts put forth by the affiliate network.

On accepting the request, both the parties have to come into an agreement on the mode of payment, the terms of affiliation and other major clauses like the minimum payout amount, etc.

Affiliate programs have become a popular means of advertising as unlike the other channels of advertising, this makes use of ‘pay for the actual business’ method. From bloggers to other online community members, anyone can become an affiliate. Today with the cost being an imperative in defining profitability, being an affiliate or making use of an affiliate program is highly economical.

Affiliate Programs:

Today making a website has become easy. So is the method of making money from the web site traffic. Affiliate programs are the popular means for making money by taking advantage of the interests of the visitors who make a stopover at one’s site. Whether a Blogger or otherwise, many resort to the tools like affiliate marketing for adding income to their hobby.

The three main parties involved in an affiliate program are the customers, the affiliate site and the merchant site. In the affiliate programs or the associate programs a link to the merchant site is posted on the affiliate web site wherein the affiliate gets paid for the number of people that get sent to the merchant web site through his site. While some pay the affiliate for every visitor to the merchant web site, others pay him for every transaction that results from this program. The terms of payment varies with the clauses mentioned in the agreement.

Affiliate program is an effective and cheap tool for marketing the brand or the company name as well as selling the products online. It was made a tremendous success after the launch of this idea by the CEO and Founder of Amazon.com in the year 1996 for selling its products. The huge impact it had on the sales of Amazon motivated other companies to use it as a major tool for marketing.

Affiliate programs make use of any of the popular three ways for making the payment, namely:

1. Pay-per-sale or cost-per-sale wherein the affiliate gets remunerated when a guest visits the merchant site through the link provided in his site and enters into a transaction with them.

2. Pay-per-click or cost-per-click program is another method wherein the affiliate is paid for every visitor who click and finds a way into the website of the merchant.

3. Pay-per-lead or cost-per-lead pays the affiliate when a visitor becomes a lead for the merchant.

As the affiliate gets paid for the number of visitors to the merchant website, keeping track of the leads, transactions and visits to the merchant web site is essential to calculate the amount due. The task of keeping track of these visits is performed by the affiliate networks or the affiliate brokers. The affiliate network is handed over the job of tracking the traffic, making arrangements for the payment and other related activities.

Today affiliate programs are a great tool for marketing the brand and the products of a company.
